True taken wrongs
If tooth bleaching is the subject, for sure everyone has an advice or something to say about this topic. In this, I would like to discuss the accuracy rate of those ‘advices’ , which I am frequently hearing about from our patients. Let’s see whose truth is truer 🙂
Wrong 1: Cleaning the teeth carbonate makes them whiter.
True 1: Due to the particulate structure of carbonate, it’s true that it corrodes the tooth surface. However, because of the size and form of the particulate, it not only rubs away outer discoloration, it also corrodes and scratches the dental enamel. Consequently, teeth will color more and faster than it was in its first condition, because the tooth enamel which is the shiniest layer, has been damaged. If this application is repeated routinely, the enamel layer will corrode completely and the below laying yellower dentin layer will reflect its color. In short, we can do no greater harm to our teeth.
Wrong 2: Nowadays bleaching products can be purchased in supermarkets and on the internet; so we may use them.
True 2: Yes, there is a number of ‘bleaching’ products on the market. However, it would be more accurate to call those products ‘corrosive’ and to ‘bleaching’. Because the process we are calling ‘bleaching’ is actually the bleaching/whitening of the inner colour of the tooth. This is possible with products that contain ‘hydrogen’ or ‘carbamide peroxide.’ Only in determined concentrations, in certain gel forms and under the protection of the gingiva, in short, under a doctor’s control, these substances should be applied. Otherwise, serious health problems may develop. Products whereas that are sold in the supermarkets, should be used supportive, namely with the recommendation of a doctor.
Wrong 3: “ I’m smoking a lot and I’d like to bleach my teeth, but ı heard that it is harmful.”
True 3: A bleaching of our teeth that is done by a dentist using products of high quality, is equal to the harm of drinking 1-2 glasses of sweet/ acidic drinks, while this is pale in comparison to the harm of only one cigarette 🙂
In theory, bleaching may be applied to persons, who smoke. However, if these persons will continue smoking for two weeks especially after the bleaching, teeth will color anew. Therefore, we suggest our patients, who smoke, the laminate application, which is produced of ceramic materials. Thus, it is possible to ensure permanent bleaching.
Wrong 4: “ The more I press the toothbrush, the more I will clean and whiten my teeth.”
True 4: It is enough to brush our teeth two times a day with a medium hard brush and some paste in the size of a pea and to make an interface cleaning (dental floss or interface brush ) once a day. Raising the brushing time to more than 2 minutes, brushing hard, using too much paste will affect the brushing quality negatively. In consequence of wrong brushing, deep corrosions may arise at the tooth surface and especially at the cervical, which is next to the gingiva. Teeth with corroded enamel layer look yellower than in their first condition because the inner layer of the teeth is darker.
DOCTOR’ RECOMMENDATION: Finally, I would like to mention that “bleaching” is a cosmetic treatment. Applying it to the right patient in the correct way, the patient will be satisfied without any complications and the patients will be happy. The most important factor in the subject of beaching is the content and the concentration of the used product. So, make research concerning the suggested system and product before your application starts. The increase of the conscious level implies the increase of quality.
